Iceland, a nation renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has developed a unique technological solution to a deeply ingrained societal concern: preventing accidental incestuous relationships. In a country with a relatively small and historically interconnected population, a new mobile application is empowering citizens to understand their familial proximity, ensuring romantic connections remain within acceptable bounds.
Developed by a team of Icelandic programmers, the application, colloquially known as the “Are We Related?” app, allows any two Icelanders to instantly ascertain their degree of kinship. By simply tapping their smartphones together, users can access a vast genealogical database, revealing how closely thay are related.
Arnar Freir Adalteinsson, one of the app’s developers, explained the core functionality: “The gadget allows any two Icelanders to see how close they are – just click on the phone screen.” He further elaborated on its primary purpose: “The gadget discussed is preventing a romantic relationship between relatives. Consumers who have registered in the gadget must compress their smartphones. If you are closer than you think, the gadget will inform you.”
A Nation’s History and the Need for Connection
This innovative digital tool emerged from Iceland’s unique demographic and past context. Settled by Norwegian Vikings and Irish monks in 874 AD, Iceland’s population has historically been small and relatively homogeneous. Over centuries, this has led to a closely-knit society where genealogical ties are often intricate and far-reaching.
The foundation for this technological solution lies in the extensive icelandic Book Database, created in 1997 by Fridrik Skilas. This extensive database draws upon census data, church records, family archives, and numerous other sources, reportedly containing approximately 95% of the information on Icelanders who have lived in the last 300 years.
Leveraging the Icelandic Book Database
The “Are We Related?” app effectively harnesses the power of this national genealogical resource. Any Icelandic citizen or legal resident can access the online database, but the mobile application brings this information directly to their fingertips, integrating it with a practical function for everyday social interactions.
“The gadget enables the Icelanders to use these data on mobile phones, and also the function of combating incest,” a representative stated.
Beyond Romance: A Tool for Connection
While the primary driver for the app’s development was the prevention of incest, its creators emphasize its broader utility. Adalsteinnson highlighted that the application can serve purposes beyond romantic compatibility.
“We added a birthday calendar to keep in mind your relatives’ birthdays,” he shared with a smile, underscoring the app’s potential to foster a stronger sense of community and familial awareness.
Despite the unique nature of this technological intervention, the developers are keen to present Iceland as a ”normal country.” The “Are We Related?” app stands as a testament to Iceland’s pragmatic approach to societal challenges, blending technological innovation with a deep respect for its heritage and the well-being of its citizens.
