IGP’s Health Sparks Leadership Questions in Nigeria Police Force
Updated May 27, 2025
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is reportedly facing health challenges related to a kidney condition, raising concerns about his leadership of the nigeria Police Force. Sources indicate that Egbetokun, who previously underwent a kidney transplant, is struggling to manage his duties with a single kidney.
Due to his health, Egbetokun maintains a limited presence at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, typically arriving in the afternoon and leaving early. Though,he remains active during nighttime hours, overseeing police matters from his residence, according to insiders.
In March 2025, Egbetokun sought President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval to attend the Government Global Security Event on Home Office Security and Policing 2025 in the United Kingdom, seeking both participation in law enforcement discussions and medical consultation. The request, referencing an invitation from the British High Commission, was reportedly turned down amid rising internal pressure and uncertainty surrounding his position as IGP.
Tensions within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have reportedly increased due to Egbetokun’s leadership style and decisions, notably concerning retirement policies and disciplinary actions. An investigation ordered by Egbetokun into alleged falsification of service records by senior officers has drawn criticism, with some suggesting bias given his own tenure extension.
In early 2024, several senior officers accused the IGP of discrimination for allegedly refusing to reinstate colleagues who had been forcibly retired despite favorable court rulings. These officers had not reached retirement age or completed the required 35 years of service.
as questions surrounding Egbetokun’s ability to lead persist, Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Idegwu Basil Okuoma is reportedly being considered as a possible replacement. Okuoma, a seasoned officer with a phd in Peace and Conflict Studies, has held key roles, including assistant Inspector-General in charge of Zone 14 (katsina and Kaduna).
Egbetokun’s health condition, coupled with internal discontent and ongoing reforms, has placed him in a precarious position. While he continues to perform his duties, pressure from within and outside the Force is intensifying, highlighting the need for capable leadership and transparent administration within the Nigeria Police Force.
What’s next
The coming weeks will be critical in determining the future leadership of the Nigeria police Force, as stakeholders weigh the implications of Egbetokun’s health and the potential for a leadership change to address internal challenges and maintain stability.
