Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ildemaro Vargas set a franchise record on April 14, 2026, by recording a hit in 11 consecutive games to begin the regular season.

Vargas reached the milestone during the top of the fifth inning on April 14, hitting a go-ahead three-run home run. This mark represents the longest season-opening hit streak by any player in the history of the Diamondbacks organization.

Surpassing Franchise Benchmarks

Prior to Vargas’ performance, the franchise record for a season-opening hit streak was 10 games. Five other Diamondbacks hitters had previously reached that mark:

  • David Peralta (2019)
  • Didi Gregorius (2013)
  • Willie Bloomquist (2011)
  • Danny Bautista (2002)
  • Steve Finley (2000)

Vargas achieved the record-breaking hit while batting in the leadoff slot. He was filling in for second baseman Ketel Marte, who was absent from the lineup due to lower back tightness.

Statistical Performance

The veteran utility infielder has maintained a high level of production throughout the start of the 2026 season. In 42 plate appearances, Vargas is batting .400 with a .429 on-base percentage and a .700 slugging percentage.

These figures contribute to a 1.129 OPS. According to data reported by Sports Illustrated, Vargas’ .400 expected batting average (xBA) is currently the highest in baseball by a significant margin.

This current surge is a notable departure from Vargas’ long-term professional averages. Over the course of parts of 10 major league seasons, the infielder has maintained a career OPS of .662.
