It has been revealed that some of the buildings of the Hamilton Hotel, which are located next to the lane where the Itaewon crushing accident happened, have been illegally extended. It is noted that the space occupies part of the northern street, and the damage may have been extended due to crowds of people in the narrower lanes.

According to Yongsan-gu Seoul Office and the head of Hamilton Hotel on the 1st, the pub on the north side of the main building of Hamilton Hotel is using the terrace (17.4㎡) without permission.

The terrace is located on World Food and Culture Street and is located on the right side of the lane above the lane down the hill where the Itaewon disaster happened.

At the time of the accident, the crowds on World Food and Culture Street had passed where the terrace was and were being driven down a narrow road. This downhill lane is approximately 5m wide at the top, but narrows as it goes down, reducing to 3.2m. It is noted that the lane has narrowed due to illegal terraces, which increased the bottleneck.

Yongsan-gu confirmed this fact last year and demanded corrective action from the hotel.

In addition, it was noted that the iron fence installed around the Hamilton Hotel, which runs approximately 10m along the road down the hill, was also a problem. The hotel has been using the street wall as a passageway to the shopping centre. However, it is known that this temporary wall is not classified as an illegal extension building according to the related law as it does not have a ceiling.

In addition, the Hamilton Hotel, completed in the 1970s, is reportedly not subject to building restrictions that require buildings to be built while maintaining a certain distance from the road. The reason for this is that the building boundary line regulations were only introduced in 2002 and do not apply to existing buildings, but are applied when buildings are demolished and built anew.

Yongsan-gu imposed an enforcement fee on the unauthorized extension of the Hamilton Hotel inn, etc.
