June 29, 2025
Girl In Red, the Norwegian singer-songwriter, spoke with NME at Glastonbury 2025 about her recent singles, acting ambitions and more. She performed on The Park stage on Sunday, June 29, playing favorites including ‘Bad Idea!,’ ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,’ and ‘We Fell In Love In October.’
The performance was also one of her first since releasing ’Hemingway’ and ‘Confession.’ The songs address themes of addiction and mental health.
Before her performance, Girl In Red, whose real name is Marie ulven Ringheim, discussed overcoming her anxiety about sharing the new tracks and her upcoming film debut in Eivind Landsvik’s Low Expectations.
Girl In Red told NME that she was immediately immersed in the festival atmosphere upon arrival. “I just got in an hour ago and already I just feel the vibes are washing over me,” she said, also noting the prevalence of “dirty people.”
Regarding the response to ‘Confession,’ Girl In Red said many people initially expressed concern. She followed it with ‘Hemingway,’ which she described as a vulnerable song about addiction, heartbreak, and relationship problems. The response to ‘Hemingway’ has been overwhelmingly positive, she said.
She admitted to being scared to release the songs, fearing she would be labeled a “recovering addict.” She added, “I felt a lot of shame at first… but then I was like,’I’ve been really sick, and addiction is an illness and it’s not something you should be ashamed about… It’s something we need to talk about a lot more’.”
Girl In Red also addressed her role in Low Expectations, noting similarities between acting and performing music. She explained that both involve tapping into emotions and portraying a character, even when not feeling those emotions in the moment.
“It’s been really intense 10-12 hour days for like a month,” she said of the filming experience, adding that it was more intense than touring. She expressed hope that the film would be well-received.
While unsure if she would pursue acting full-time,Girl In Red emphasized that music remains an integral part of her identity. She said she wants to create things she is proud of and is open to exploring new avenues.
The release date for Low Expectations has not been announced, but it is indeed anticipated to be released in 2026.
