In the first half of the banking sector, the number of branches decreased by 79 compared to the previous year.

[서울=뉴스핌] Reporter Hong Hong-young = The number of branches of domestic banks continued to decrease in the first half of this year.

According to the ‘State of Branch Operations of Domestic Banks in the First Half of the Year’ announced by the Financial Supervisory Service on the 14th, the number of branches of domestic banks as of the end of June was 6326, down 79 from the end of the previous year (6405).

The declining trend is continuing due to the expansion of non-face-to-face transactions such as mobile banking and promotion of store efficiency. The number of stores decreased by 23 in 2018, 57 in 2019, and 304 in 2020.

In the first half of this year, 11 new stores were opened and 90 closed stores were counted. As for the number of new branches by bank, Nonghyup Bank has five, Kookmin Bank and IBK have two each, and Shinhan Bank and Hana Bank have one each. As for the number of closed branches by bank, Kookmin Bank had the most with 20, followed by Hana Bank with 19, Korea Development Bank with 8, and Daegu Bank with 7.

The number of branches of commercial banks (54) accounted for 68.4% of the total, followed by regional banks (15) and special banks (10). Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank each decreased by 18, while Korea Development Bank decreased by 8, Daegu Bank by 7, Woori Bank by 6, Shinhan Bank by 5 and Citibank by 4.

By region, the number of stores in the metropolitan area decreased by 61, accounting for 77.2% of the total, and 18 in the non-metropolitan area decreased.

The FSS plans to encourage banks to respect the autonomy of banks in store management, but to minimize inconvenience to financial users such as the elderly.

To this end, we plan to continue monitoring efforts to protect financial accessibility of financial users, such as requiring banks to faithfully operate the ‘joint procedure for store closures’ (the Federation of Banks), such as a preliminary impact assessment.
