In the Philippines: Progress Made in Legalizing Less Harmful Alternatives, But Widespread Acceptance Still Lacking

In the Philippines, Progress Made Towards Legalizing Alternative Nicotine Products

Despite ongoing efforts, the widespread acceptance of less harmful alternative nicotine products remains elusive in the Philippines.

However, here are six compelling reasons supporting the need to reevaluate our perspective on nicotine and abandon the notion of it being solely responsible for causing diseases.

1. Users’ Desire and the Role of Public Health Authorities

The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) has emphasized the importance of not promoting nicotine use. Still, it argues against banning smokers who wish to switch to e-cigarettes or similar alternatives. The NHS asserts that while nicotine is addictive in cigarettes, it is relatively harmless on its own. The real dangers of smoking arise from the multitude of toxic chemicals present in tobacco smoke.

2. Insights from the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom

According to the Royal College of Physicians, e-cigarettes possess characteristics that make them ideal for harm reduction in comparison to traditional tobacco products. While the nicotine delivery in e-cigarettes varies, they lack the harmful ingredients found in cigarette smoke.

3. Addressing the Complexity of Nicotine Addiction

Undoubtedly, nicotine’s release of dopamine plays a role in addiction. However, quitting smoking is not solely hindered by nicotine, as evident from the continued struggle of individuals who switch to nicotine patches. A study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence reveals that nicotine dependence is significantly lower among e-cigarette users compared to conventional smokers.

4. Uncovering the Medical Benefits of Nicotine

Contrary to popular misconceptions, research dating back to the 1960s suggests that smoking may reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Recent studies also indicate that nicotine leads to lower Parkinson’s disease rates, even among non-smokers using smokeless tobacco products like snus.

5. Dispelling Misconceptions to Reduce Harm

Public understanding of nicotine remains flawed, with a prevalent misconception associating nicotine in cigarettes with cancer. Astonishingly, 80% of doctors also incorrectly believe nicotine is carcinogenic. These misconceptions, held by both society and experts, have adverse consequences, impeding the publication of the fact that e-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional smoking. A review of over 750 studies concluded that only a small fraction of them met rigorous scientific standards.

6. The Ineffectiveness of Prohibition

Prohibitions have historically proven ineffective, such as the United States’ failed ban on alcohol, which ultimately led to increased consumption. The global war on drugs also stands as a testament to the futility of such measures, exacerbating the drug epidemic instead of resolving it. It can be extrapolated that a similar approach towards nicotine would yield comparable results.

Tobacco and tobacco-related diseases continue to present humanity with significant challenges. To address these issues, we must approach the root causes without bias. Let’s recognize the truth that nicotine is not our real enemy.

in the Philippines Progress is being made to legalize less harmful alternative products. But it has still not been able to secure widespread acceptance.

With that in mind, we have six reasons to support that. It’s time to stop slamming “nicotine” as a disease-causing agent.

Users want nicotine. but he died of smoking
Of course, we shouldn’t encourage people to start using “nicotine,” but public health authorities shouldn’t ban smokers who want to switch to e-cigarettes and alternatives, the UK’s National Health Service has shown Opinion

“Although nicotine is an addictive substance in cigarettes, But nicotine itself is relatively harmless. because almost all of the dangers of smoking come from the thousands of chemicals in tobacco smoke. Most of them are toxic to the body.

If the product type substitution “nicotine patches and gum” is not a problem, “e-cigarettes” should not be a problem either.

Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom Summarizing the role of using e-cigarettes as a tool in delivering nicotine to the body: “E-cigarettes meet a number of criteria for an ideal product to reduce the harm of tobacco. Although the delivery of nicotine from e-cigarettes depends on many factors. which can contain large amounts of nicotine But it does not contain harmful ingredients like those found in cigarette smoke. [… ] “

Nicotine addiction is complex, so various “taboos” cannot be dealt with effectively.

nicotine cause the release of dopamine But nicotine is not the only reason many people fail to quit smoking. because otherwise All smokers who switch to nicotine patches should stop smoking immediately, which

A study published in 2015 inScience Journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence find

If there is no smoke Nicotine dependence is very low. that means Most e-smokers experience less addiction problems than real smokers.

reveals the medical benefits of nicotine

Research in 1960 showed that smokers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than non-smokers. Later, a recent study suggested that nicotine causes lower levels of Parkinson’s disease in smokers. The research also found that “Men who do not smoke but use snus have a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.”

misconceptions about nicotine There has been no progress in reducing harm to smokers.

Unfortunately, the general public’s perception of nicotine is still wrong. also misunderstood “Nicotine in cigarettes is a substance that causes cancer from smoking.” And even 80 percent of doctors mistake nicotine for cancer. These misunderstandings of society and experts lead to negative consequences. and the fact that “e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking” has not been published.

A recent review of 755 studies (reviews) on the overall effects of e-cigarettes concluded that only 37 had “Meets exact scientific quality criteria.”

“Prohibitions” (maybe) don’t always work.
History suggests that bans or bans often do not work. And that is one of the most overlooked lessons, like the ban on alcohol in the United States. which is a complete failure. And even lead to more alcohol consumption. Including the global war on drugs. This does not make it possible to achieve the desired goal or even worsen the problem of the drug epidemic. It could therefore be concluded that the war on nicotine will have the same effect in the future.

Tobacco and tobacco-related diseases remain another challenge for humanity, and we need to deal with the “root” of these problems without prejudice. And this is why we all need to know that. “Nicotine is not our real enemy.”
