The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced on the 26th that the number of HIV-infected people in 2023 (preliminary number) was 669, an increase of 37 over the previous year, the first increase in seven years . This is believed to be due to people who had avoided getting tested in the past returning to get tested once the coronavirus pandemic is over.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, a total of 960 people were diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in 2023. The number of HIV antibody tests performed at public health centers increased by 33,033 from the previous year to 106,137, and the number of consultations increased by 19,079 from the previous year to 86,088.

According to the route of infection, sexual contact accounts for approximately 84% of HIV-infected people and approximately 69% of AIDS patients. In both cases 90% were men.

The AIDS Trend Committee of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare urges people to actively go to health centers and other places for free and anonymous testing.
