CHARLEROI,Belgium – Prostitution remains a persistent issue in Charleroi, but its nature has‍ evolved, presenting new challenges for support services. Aid organizations report increasing difficulty in monitoring and‍ assisting sex workers due to the rise of online platforms and private venues.

The rise of “Clandestine Prostitution”

The shift towards social networks, online ⁤applications, and internet advertisements has moved prostitution away from customary street corners and bars. This relocation into private apartments and hotels has complicated the work of both law enforcement and field associations.

Local organizations⁣ describe this phenomenon as “clandestine prostitution,” characterized by increased ‍invisibility and a growing number of migrant workers operating in private settings.

“For quite a few years, ‍they have been more and⁣ more migrant people and more and more people who exercise invisible in private, in apartments, in hotels. And then there are also little‍ by little less hot districts and thus fewer bars and therefore this trip to a more⁣ invisible prostitution. We have adapted, we come into contact with workers via ⁣groups on social networks or by messages, but indeed, we only have access to the visible part of the⁢ iceberg.”

Cécile⁤ Cheront, co-supervisor of ASBL Espace⁢ P, a Charleroi-based association that supports sex workers, told reporters that the association ⁣has adapted its outreach methods to connect with workers through social media groups and ⁢messaging. Though, she emphasized that thes efforts only reach ⁣”the visible part of the iceberg.”

Challenges for Support Organizations

The increasing prevalence of online and private prostitution poses significant challenges for organizations like⁣ Espace P, ⁤hindering their ability to provide support and ensure the safety of sex workers.
