india’s foreign exchange ‍reserves experienced a significant boost, climbing⁤ $5.17 billion to reach ⁣$696.66 billion for the week ending June 6, according to data released⁢ by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday. ⁢This surge brings ⁤the country’s forex kitty ⁤closer to its all-time high of $704.885 billion, recorded at the close of September 2024.

The strengthening ⁤of India’s foreign exchange reserves also provides support to the ⁣rupee in its exchange rate against the U.S. dollar.A substantial portion of the reserves, foreign currency ⁢assets, increased by $3.47⁤ billion to $587.69 billion during ⁤the same⁤ week. These⁣ assets are ‍valued ⁣in dollars and include the effects of appreciation⁣ or depreciation of non-U.S. currencies like the ⁤euro, pound, and yen.

Furthermore, the gold component of the forex reserves saw an ⁤increase of $1.6 million, reaching $85.89 billion. Globally, central banks ⁢are increasingly turning to gold as⁢ a safe-haven asset amid geopolitical uncertainties. the current value of gold reserves stands at $83.582 billion. The share of gold held by ⁣the RBI in its⁤ foreign exchange reserves has nearly doubled ⁣as 2021.

The⁢ RBI also⁤ reported ⁤that‍ special drawing rights increased by $102 million ⁢to⁣ $18.67 billion. India’s⁢ reserve position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rose by $14 million to $4.4 billion during the reporting week.

RBI Governor ⁣Sanjay Malhotra‍ noted last week, following the monetary policy review, that the foreign exchange⁤ reserves stood at $691.5 billion in the week ending May ⁢30. These reserves are sufficient to cover more than ⁤11 months of goods imports and about 96% of outstanding external debt.

“India’s external sector remains resilient as key external⁤ sector ⁢vulnerability‍ indicators continue⁣ to ‍improve. We remain confident of meeting our external financing requirements,” Malhotra said.
⁤

An increase in foreign exchange reserves signals strong economic fundamentals, providing the RBI with greater flexibility to stabilize the rupee during periods of volatility. ⁤A robust⁤ forex⁣ kitty allows the RBI to intervene in⁤ currency markets, releasing dollars to prevent a sharp decline in the rupee’s value.

What’s next

Looking ahead, continued growth in India’s foreign exchange reserves ‍is expected to further strengthen the rupee and provide a buffer against global economic shocks.
