India Unleash Goal-Scoring Frenzy: Malaysia Left Reeling in 8-Goal Thrashing at Asian Champions Trophy 2024
India Dominates Malaysia 8-1 in 2024 Asian Men’s Champions Trophy
India Secures Nine Points with Third Consecutive Win
A stunning hat-trick from Rajkumar Pal helped the Indian men’s hockey team crush Malaysia 8-1 in the third round of the 2024 Asian Men’s Champions Trophy in Mochi, China on Wednesday.
Apart from Rajkumar Pal (3′, 25′, 33′), Araijeet Singh Hundal (6′, 39′), Jugraj Singh (7′), Captain Harmanpreet Singh (22′) and Uttam Singh (40′) also contributed to India’s third consecutive win in the tournament. The win took them to nine points from three games and solidified their lead at the top of the points table. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Akhimullah Anuar (34′) scored the only goal.
India’s Aggressive Start
Riding on the momentum of their consecutive wins, India started the game aggressively. They quickly put Malaysia on the defensive, scoring three goals in just seven minutes.
The first goal was scored by a superb Rajkumar Pal (3′). The second was scored by Araijeet Singh Hundal (6′) who fired a shot past the Malaysian goalkeeper’s left shoulder into the top corner of the far post, and the third was scored by Jugraj Singh who powerfully dragged home from a routine penalty corner in the next minute of the first quarter.
Malaysia’s Struggle
Malaysia, on the other hand, took some time to adjust. They endured several penalty corners late in the first period and started the next period on a positive note. They won the first penalty of the game in the 18th minute but Suraj Karkera, who was under the goal, saved easily. India immediately counterattacked and won another penalty corner but Malaysia’s first striker was out of danger.
India’s Continued Assault
India continued their assault on the Malaysian half. They won a series of penalty corners, the last of which was converted by captain Harmanpreet Singh in the 22nd minute to make it 4-0.
Rajkumar added his second goal of the game in the 25th minute, as the Malaysian goalkeeper latched onto Uttam Singh’s shot inside the circle and swung the ball into the net. While Malaysia were blundering in defence, India were cool in attack, and ended the first half with a 5-0 lead.
Third Quarter Dominance
The third quarter continued in a similar fashion, with the Indian team maintaining control of the game through relentless attacks. Rajkumar completed his hat-trick by scoring from a rebound from Malaysian goalkeeper Adrian, who had saved Vivek Sagar Prasad’s first-time shot from open play.
Meanwhile, Malaysia sneaked into India’s circle and scored through Akhimullah Anuar (34′) in the very next minute. But India added two more goals in the 39th minute when Hundal added his second and Uttam slotted home after a chaotic penalty corner routine in the 40th minute to seal an 8-1 third-quarter victory.
Final Quarter
The final quarter was uneventful as India slowed down and Malaysia failed to capitalise on their chances. With about six seconds left, India requested a video referral for a penalty corner, which was unsuccessful and thus no further goals were scored in the final quarter.
Hero of the Match
Arajiet Singh Hundal, who was delighted with India’s third consecutive win, said, “We want to be ahead in every game and win every game. That’s what we planned in the team meeting. We came here to win. Personally, the last two games were not good, but I am very happy to score today. I am gaining confidence day by day and will do much better for India in the upcoming games.”
