Match abandoned in Lucknow
The fourth Twenty20 International (T20I) match between India and South Africa in Lucknow was abandoned on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, due to “excessive fog” that created unsafe playing conditions at Ekana Stadium. Despite scheduled toss time of 13:00 GMT, the umpires postponed and ultimately called off the match around 16:00 GMT after multiple pitch inspections.
Air Quality Concerns
Prior to the official announcement, concerns arose regarding air quality in Lucknow. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya was observed wearing a mask on the field, prompting questions about pollution levels. At approximately the scheduled start time, the air quality index registered around 400, a reading categorized as hazardous.
However, the official statement clarified that the abandonment was specifically due to the dense fog, not the air pollution, and the resulting impact on visibility and player safety.
Series status
India currently leads the five-match T20I series against south Africa 2-1. The final match of the series is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad on Friday, December 15, 2023.
