Fever Face ‌Challenges as Injuries Mount Without Caitlin Clark

 Updated ⁤May 31, 2025

The Indiana fever’s challenges have⁣ intensified. Already navigating a stretch without Caitlin Clark, the team’s depth was further tested during Friday’s game against the Connecticut Sun.

Sydney Colson, the Fever’s‍ other ⁤point guard, exited in ⁢the first quarter with a left leg injury. Later, Sophie Cunningham, filling in as point guard, re-aggravated a preseason ankle sprain. Despite DeWanna Bonner’s efforts, the Sun secured⁢ their first win, defeating the Fever, who now have⁤ four losses in six games. The team‍ is working hard to find a winning strategy for indiana Fever games.

“It’s hard when you keep losing people,” Bonner said. ⁤”Like you try to piece it together and we came in with‌ one gameplan and than you lose your other point guard, so you got to pivot on the fly and we’re a new team at that.”

The fever started ‌strong offensively, but⁣ Colson’s injury ‌shifted the game’s momentum. Coach ‍Stephanie White noted the ⁢impact, saying,”I think at the end of the first quarter into the second,it was ‌like a gut punch and⁣ then we had to really reconfigure what we where doing on ⁢the offensive end.”

Cunningham’s subsequent injury provided a spark, according ⁤to⁤ White.Bonner’s three-pointers briefly ‍gave Indiana the lead,but the Sun responded,ultimately winning 84-80 after Kelsey Mitchell’s late three-point attempt missed.

“We came ⁢together as a team,”‌ Bonner said regarding the fourth-quarter surge. “Steph said‍ like, ‘Stay‍ together. We’re being tested right now and we got to depend on each other and use each other for energy right now.’”

The Fever’s‍ outlook remains uncertain. White had no immediate updates on Colson or Cunningham. The team⁣ may seek an emergency hardship exemption if all three guards are unavailable, though this would impact their limited cap space. The team is looking for ways to improve their basketball performance.

“We got to get⁤ creative,” White said. “We‍ got to⁣ figure out who can get us into offense. We got to figure out what⁣ actions we can run and we’re going to have to‌ do the same thing defensively, honestly,⁣ and from a rotation standpoint.”

What’s next

The Fever,⁤ who hoped to gain⁤ ground against teams with weaker records, now face a greater challenge ⁤to adapt and survive this tough stretch early in the season. The team is working ⁤hard to find a winning strategy for Indiana Fever games.
