KUALA LUMPUR: Indian women won the Asian Badminton Team Championship for the first time after defeating Thailand in a thrilling final. Earlier, the men’s team won bronze twice. India won 3-2.
When the two teams were tied 2-2, teenager Anmol Kharb won the crucial singles and led the team to gold. In another single, PV Sindhu and Tresa Jolie-Gayatri Gopichand Singh won the doubles. Ashmita Chaliha lost in singles and Priya Konyengbam-Shruti Mishra lost in doubles. India had beaten first seeds China in the group stage and second seeds Japan in the semi-finals.

PV competed in the first singles for India. Indus. Supanida Katetholng also came out for the Thai team. Sindhu won the match easily (21-12, 21-12). In the doubles that followed, Tresa Joly and Gayathri Jong defeated Kolfan and Ravinda Prajongjai (21-16, 18-21, 21-16). With this, India took a 2-0 lead.
However, Thailand clawed their way back into the match as Ashmita was defeated by Busanan Ongbamruhphan in the second singles (11-21, 14-21). In the second doubles, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra lost to Benyapa Aimsard and Nuntakaran Aimsard (11-21, 9-21). With this the score was tied at 2-2.
17-year-old Anmol Kharb played for India in the third singles, which will decide the champions, against experienced Pohnpei Choiqing Wong. However, Ponpicha had no answer to Anmol’s fighting spirit (21-14, 21-9). With this, India owns the gold medal.
