Indonesia Relies Heavily on Set Pieces
Indonesia Relies on Set Pieces for Draw Against Laos in ASEAN Championship
Manahan Stadium, Solo - Indonesia was held to a 3-3 draw by Laos in their second Group B match of the 2024 ASEAN Championship, with all three Indonesian goals coming from set pieces. The Garuda struggled to create clear-cut chances from open play, raising concerns about their attacking options moving forward.
The home side found themselves trailing twice in the first half, with Phousomboun Panyavong and Phathana Phommathep scoring for Laos in the 9th and 13th minutes respectively. Indonesia responded quickly, with Kadek Arel pulling one back in the 12th minute from a Pratama Arhan throw-in, followed by a Muhammad Ferarri equalizer just six minutes later.
Ferarri then put indonesia ahead in the 72nd minute, converting a Dony Tri Pamungkas corner kick. However, a controversial goal from Peter Phanthavong in the 77th minute denied Indonesia a victory.
Despite dominating possession (66%) and unleashing 22 shots, Indonesia onyl managed eight shots on target, with five of those coming from set pieces.
“We need to be more creative in our open play,” said Indonesian coach Shin Tae-yong after the match. “We can’t rely solely on set pieces to score goals.”
The reliance on set pieces for goals is a double-edged sword for Indonesia. while it highlights their effectiveness in these situations, it also exposes a lack of fluidity and creativity in their open play.
this issue will need to be addressed before their crucial match against Vietnam on Sunday. Can Indonesia find a way to unlock defenses through open play, or will they continue to depend on set pieces to find the back of the net?
