Indonesia Weather: Extreme Risks in Southern Regions – January 2024
Indonesia Braces for Increased Extreme Weather
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is warning residents of southern Sumatra, Java, Bali, and nusa Tenggara to prepare for increased rainfall and potential extreme weather events towards the end of January 2026.
According to BMKG Head teuku Faisal Fathani, current atmospheric disturbances are causing significant progress of convective clouds - rain clouds – across southern Indonesia. This situation raises the risk of flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation. Faisal stated, “we urge the public to remain calm but remain vigilant in the face of potential extreme weather towards the end of January,” in a written statement released on Wednesday, January 21, 2025.
BMKG Acting Deputy for Meteorology Andri Ramdhani cited several factors influencing the forecast for the coming week. These include Tropical cyclone 97S, currently located in the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia. Ramdhani explained that the cyclone’s westward movement could strengthen wind convergence and deflection from the west coast of Sumatra to Nusa Tenggara.
The BMKG continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.
