Indonesian Rescue Teams Find Plane Wreckage in Mountains

Rescuers are searching for wreckage on a mountain ridgeline in Indonesia ​following a ⁢recent plane crash, according to photos and videos⁢ released by the National Search and ⁣Rescue Agency on Sunday.

Indonesia’s Transportation Challenges

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, heavily relies‌ on air transport and ferries for connectivity. This reliance contributes to a higher risk of transportation accidents.

The country has experienced numerous transportation accidents in recent years,including plane crashes,bus accidents,and ⁣ferry sinkings. According to the ‌International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indonesia has been working to improve it’s ‍aviation safety ‍record, but challenges remain due​ to the complexity of ⁢its geography and infrastructure.

National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Response

The National Search ⁣and Rescue‌ Agency (Basarnas), Indonesia’s primary search and rescue association,⁤ is currently leading the recovery⁢ efforts. photos released by Basarnas ⁤on Sunday showed⁣ rescuers navigating⁢ steep‍ and⁣ foggy terrain to locate scattered debris⁤ from the crash.

Basarnas ‌was established in 1978 and is responsible for coordinating⁣ search and ⁢rescue operations‍ throughout⁣ Indonesia’s vast territory. ⁢ Their⁣ official ‍website ​details their capabilities and ongoing operations.

recent Indonesian Transportation ‍Accidents

indonesia⁤ has a history of transportation accidents. In January 2021, Sriwijaya Air Flight ⁣182, a Boeing 737-500, crashed into the Java Sea shortly after ​takeoff from Jakarta, killing all 62 people on board. ⁤

Prior to that, ‌in October 2018, Lion Air Flight 610, also a Boeing⁢ 737 MAX, ⁢crashed into the Java Sea, killing all 189 ‌people on board. This accident, along with the⁢ subsequent Ethiopian ⁢Airlines ⁢crash, led to the global grounding⁣ of⁣ the 737 MAX.
