The country has experienced numerous transportation accidents in recent years, including plane crashes, bus accidents, and ferry sinkings. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indonesia has been working to improve it’s aviation safety record, but challenges remain due to the complexity of its geography and infrastructure.

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Indonesia’s primary search and rescue association, is currently leading the recovery efforts. photos released by Basarnas on Sunday showed rescuers navigating steep and foggy terrain to locate scattered debris from the crash.
Basarnas was established in 1978 and is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations throughout Indonesia’s vast territory. Their official website details their capabilities and ongoing operations.
