Indonesia’s Chance to Reach AFF Cup 2024 Semifinals, Potential Player Additions
Indonesia Eyes Semifinal Berth, Erick Thohir Weighs Options for Roster Boost
Solo, Indonesia – Indonesia’s national football team still has a strong chance to advance to the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Championship. A victory against the Philippines in their final Group B match at Manahan Stadium in Solo on December 21st will secure their spot.
With a semifinal berth within reach, PSSI (Football Association of Indonesia) Chairman Erick Thohir has hinted at the possibility of bolstering the squad with additional players.Names like Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner have been circulating as potential additions.
Though, Thohir emphasized that PSSI wouldn’t force any player to join the team, especially considering the AFF Championship is not a FIFA-sanctioned event.”From the beginning, we haven’t insisted on all players joining. Our priority is to develop players from the Indonesian league. But those playing abroad, like Rafael Struick and Marselino Ferdinan, are certainly welcome,” Thohir stated.
He stressed the importance of respecting players’ careers and avoiding needless strain.
“Remember, players get tired and can get injured. We must respect that and not force them. We need to protect their careers,” he added.
Should Indonesia advance to the semifinals, they could face tough opponents like Thailand, Malaysia, or Singapore. The home-and-away format of the tournament presents a challenge, as players may experience fatigue due to limited recovery time.
Thohir acknowledged the demanding schedule but drew parallels with european football, where teams compete in both domestic leagues and continental tournaments.
“All formats are tiring, that’s why I didn’t ask the league to stop. We focus on developing young players. All formats are tiring,” he said.
“Look at the European leagues, they play in their domestic leagues and then in the Champions League in the middle of the season,” Thohir, who also serves as indonesia’s Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, pointed out.
“I hope that whatever programs we implement, everyone will be committed,” he concluded.
