Indonesia’s Prabowo Calls for Efficient Spending Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
Indonesia’s President Calls for Fiscal Prudence Amid Global Uncertainty
Jakarta, Indonesia – President Prabowo Subianto urged his cabinet to prioritize efficient government spending as the world grapples with rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Speaking to ministers and officials on Tuesday, Subianto emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility, stating, “We cannot tolerate leaks, heavy spending, things that do not address the problems of our people, that aren’t productive.” He called for a reduction in ceremonial events and seminars, advocating for a more streamlined approach to government operations.
while Subianto didn’t explicitly name any countries, he cited a “military emergency” as an example of the global challenges impacting economic stability. “Tensions, wars, heavy competition between major powers … this causes economic uncertainties,” he warned.
To address these concerns, Subianto launched a new request designed to streamline procurement processes for state agencies. This initiative, he believes, will contribute to more efficient government spending.
Indonesia’s 2024 state budget allocates 3,621 trillion rupiah ($228.31 billion) for government spending, a 6% increase from this year. The budget deficit is projected at 2.53% of the country’s gross domestic product, down from 2.7% this year.
Subianto has long aimed to accelerate Indonesia’s economic growth to 8%, up from the current 5%. He plans to achieve this by developing industries that process the country’s abundant natural resources and by implementing flagship programs like providing free school meals to students.
During his address, Subianto also stressed the importance of a more targeted subsidy scheme, ensuring that these benefits reach those who need them most.
Indonesia’s Economic Tightrope: balancing Growth with Prudent Spending
NewsDirectory3.com Exclusive Interview with Dr. Amelia Rusdi, Senior Economist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Jakarta
NewsDirectory3: President Subianto’s call for fiscal prudence amidst global uncertainty seems to be a delicate balancing act. How do you assess this approach, notably considering his ambitious growth targets?
Dr. Rusdi: It’s a necessary balancing act. President Subianto is right to highlight the risks posed by global instability. Geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties can significantly impact Indonesia’s growth trajectory. While ambitious targets are commendable, achieving them requires a stable economic foundation. Fiscal responsibility, as emphasized by the President, is crucial to building that foundation.
NewsDirectory3: The President specifically mentioned streamlining procurement processes. What impact could this have on government spending and overall efficiency?
Dr. Rusdi: Streamlining procurement can lead to significant cost savings and improved efficiency.
Indonesia has a history of bureaucratic hurdles and inefficiencies in procurement. A simplified process could reduce unneeded spending, prevent corruption, and ensure timely delivery of goods and services. This,in turn, can contribute to more effective utilization of the allocated budget.
NewsDirectory3: How do you view the President’s focus on targeted subsidies? What are the potential benefits and challenges of such an approach?
Dr. Rusdi: A targeted subsidy scheme can be more effective in ensuring that resources reach their intended beneficiaries. By focusing on those who need them most, it can provide a safety net for vulnerable populations while reducing wasteful spending. The challenge lies in implementing a system that is transparent, efficient, and free from political influence.
NewsDirectory3: The 2024 budget allocates a significant sum for government spending. Do you believe it strikes a good balance between investing in growth and maintaining fiscal discipline?
Dr.Rusdi: It’s a careful balancing act. The budget reflects the government’s commitment to both economic development and fiscal responsibility. the increase in spending is intended to support the President’s growth agenda, particularly in key sectors like infrastructure and resource processing. However, the projected decrease in the budget deficit demonstrates a commitment to containing spending and maintaining a healthy fiscal position.
NewsDirectory3: Thank you for your insights, Dr.Rusdi.
