Indonesia’s Soccer Team Boosted by Surge in Naturalized Players

Jakarta, Indonesia – The Indonesian national soccer team, known as Timnas Indonesia, is riding a wave of success fueled by a record number of naturalized players.In 2024 alone, 10 players of Indonesian descent born overseas completed the naturalization process, injecting fresh talent and experiance into the squad. This influx has contributed considerably to the team’s impressive performance in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This strategic move by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) began in March 2024 with the naturalization of Nathan Tjoe-A-On, a defender for Swansea City. Tjoe-A-On quickly became a key player, appearing in 17 matches for both the senior national team and the U-23 squad.

“It’s an honor to represent Indonesia,” Tjoe-A-On said. “I’m proud to be part of this team and contribute to its success.”

Prior to Tjoe-A-On, Justin Hubner, who plays for a club in the Netherlands, was naturalized in late December 2023 and made his debut for Timnas Indonesia on January 2, 2024.

The momentum continued with the naturalization of Ragnar Oratmangoen (FCV Dender) and Thom Haye (Almere City) in March. Oratmangoen, a winger, has already scored two goals and provided two assists in nine appearances, while Haye, a midfielder, has made a similar impact in the midfield.

Maarten Paes, a goalkeeper for FC Dallas, became a citizen in April but joined the national team in September. Despite facing challenges with transferring his international registration, Paes has made six appearances, recording two clean sheets and a penalty save.

Calvin Verdonk (NEC Nijmegen) followed in June, taking over the left-back position previously held by Pratama Arhan and consistently performing in seven matches for Timnas Indonesia.

Young talent Jens Raven was naturalized in June and immediately earned a starting spot in the U-19 national team for the 2024 AFF U-19 Championship.

Mees Hilgers and Eliano Reijnders completed their naturalization process in September, while Kevin Diks (F.C. Copenhagen) joined the ranks in November.

This influx of talent has significantly strengthened Timnas Indonesia. The team finished third in its group during the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, accumulating six points from six matches.This performance demonstrates a marked improvement in the team’s quality and competitiveness.

With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers continuing in 2025, speculation is rife about whether more players of Indonesian descent will be naturalized to further bolster the national team.
