INEOSicza Britannia Sets Sail for the 38th America’s Cup;Sir Jim Ratcliffe Reflects on Barcelona Success
INEOS is setting a course for the 38th America’s Cup, unveiling its challenger team, INEOS Britannia, following a parting of ways with legendary British sailor, Sir Ben Ainslie. The decision, according to sources, was a result of inconclusive negotiations post the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona.
Under the guidance of new CEO, Dave Endean, an industry veteran with extensive America’s Cup and sailing experience, INEOS Britannia will continue to leverage the technological prowess of the Mercedes F1 Team, led by Technical Director James Allison.
Chairman of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, expressed pride in their Barcelona campaign, "We’re enormously proud of what we achieved there—developing a competitive British boat, winning the Louis Vuitton Cup, and taking races from the defending team for the first time in decades. Now, we’re looking ahead to the 38th America’s Cup with INEOS Britannia."
Ratcliffe announced that the team has already begun work on the design of their AC38 yacht, with 100 scientists and engineers dedicated to the project. More details on INEOS Britannia’s challenge will be revealed in due course.
Meanwhile, Sir Ben Ainslie, in a separate statement, expressed surprise at INEOS and Mercedes F1’s announcement and raised significant legal and practical obstacles that the plan faces. Ainslie’s team, unrelated to INEOS Britannia, will now be known as Athena Racing, aligning with the British Women’s and Youth America’s Cup team, the Athena Pathway.
As Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggests, INEOS Britannia’s journey to the 38th America’s Cup has just begun. With a renewed focus, a talented leadership team, and the technological expertise of Mercedes F1, the team is poised to make a strong challenge for sailing’s most prestigious prize. While the departure of Sir Ben Ainslie marks a significant change, the world of sailing awaits with anticipation to witness the legacy INEOS Britannia will build.
