Increased travel, gatherings, and commercial activities during the New Year holidays increase the risk of infectious diseases, including seasonal flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, hand, foot and mouth disease, and dengue.

Hospital Admissions Surge in Ho Chi Minh City

At the pulmonology department of Thông Nhât hospital in Ho chi Minh City (South), the number of hospitalized patients has increased sharply in recent days. The service cares for between 70 and 80 patients per day, despite a capacity of only 50 beds.

Most cases are serious and complex, and many patients require close monitoring or respiratory support, reflecting an increase in respiratory and related infections at the start of the year.

Symptoms and Vulnerable Populations

According to dr. Ngô Thê Hoàng, head of the hospital’s pulmonology department, hospitalizations for respiratory conditions have increased significantly, especially among elderly patients and those with underlying illnesses. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, persistent cough, sputum production, wheezing, chest tightness, fatigue, and decreased mobility.

Respiratory illnesses pose particular risks to older adults because their symptoms are often atypical.
