Mosquito Defense: Sprays, Sting Relief, and What Really Works
As temperatures rise and spring takes hold, so does the familiar buzz of mosquitoes. While insect repellent sprays promise protection, what happens after the bite? A recent examination by Stiftung Warentest, detailed in their issue 5/2025, examines the effectiveness of various mosquito sprays and sting relief products.
Insect Repellent Sprays: Finding the best Defense
The product testers evaluated ten diffrent mosquito and tick repellents, using over 2,400 ticks and 3,100 mosquitoes. The study measured how long each spray protected test subjects’ skin when applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Only three products received a passing grade. Anti Brumm’s “Forte” spray emerged as the top performer, earning a grade of 1.7 and excelling in both mosquito and tick protection.

according to Stiftung Warentest, “Forte” provided up to 7.5 hours of protection against the mosquito species tested. In contrast, the least effective products offered only about 2.5 hours of protection, sometimes due to manufacturers’ recommended low dosage amounts. The “Protect mosquito protective spray” from Mosquito secured second place with a grade of 2.1.
Potential Risks: Ingredients and side Effects
stiftung Warentest notes that the active ingredients in insect repellent sprays are not entirely harmless. Deet, Icaridin, and PMD can all cause eye irritation, though to varying degrees.
Deet, a key ingredient in the top-rated spray, is highly effective against mosquitoes and ticks but can cause important eye irritation and allergic skin reactions. Icaridin, found in the second-place spray, is considered more tolerable but can still irritate the eyes.
Testers were less impressed with PMD, citing its mediocre effectiveness against mosquitoes and potential for strong eye irritation.Additionally, the strong fragrances in some sprays can trigger allergic reactions.
Insect repellent sprays are not intended for continuous use. Targeted application, such as before a hike, is recommended.

Sting Relief: How Do Sting Healers Work?
Mosquito bites introduce irritants into the skin via saliva, triggering the release of histamine and causing itching. Sting healers aim to counteract this process.
Ten of the fourteen sting relief pens tested rely on heat to break down the irritants in the insect saliva and alleviate itching. Stiftung Warentest cites a “well-made study” indicating that applying approximately 124 degrees Fahrenheit (51 degrees Celsius) to the bite for five seconds can be effective. Other data suggest that slightly lower temperatures may also work.
Skepticism Surrounds Suction Devices
Some sting relief devices utilize electrical impulses, generated by deforming certain materials when a button is pressed. This creates a slight tingling sensation at the bite site. “According to research results, this can definitely help – and be more pleasant than heat pins that some people find painful,” Stiftung Warentest reports.
though, Stiftung Warentest remains unconvinced of the benefits of suction-based devices, which claim to extract irritants from the bite.
Limited Recommendations for Sting Healers
Stiftung Warentest offers a limited advice for nine sting healers (seven using heat, two using electrical impulses). This is due to manufacturers’ sometimes unsubstantiated claims, such as effectiveness against bee or horsefly stings, or the ability to reduce swelling.
The testers advise against using certain products altogether. One heat pen reached temperatures of 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius) and only switched off after 30 seconds, posing a burn risk. Another product’s temperature dropped too quickly to be effective.
Post-Bite Relief: What Helps Against Itching?
Resist the urge to scratch. Scratching irritates the skin further, possibly leading to inflammation and increased itching, according to the health knowledge foundation. It also creates an entry point for germs.
Cooling the bite can provide relief. If a cooling pack is unavailable, wrap ice cubes in a cloth. Cold temperatures constrict blood vessels, slowing the spread of itch-promoting substances. Gels and ointments that inhibit histamine can also soothe mosquito bites.
