Instagram Expands to iPad with New Features
Instagram has released a dedicated app for the iPad, marking a important expansion beyond its mobile-first strategy. The app, launched after a period of anticipation, is designed to leverage the larger screen real estate of the iPad for a more immersive user experience. This follows WhatsApp’s iPad app launch in May, signaling Meta’s commitment to tablet users.
The core experience centers around ”lean-back entertainment,” with Reels taking prominence within the app.Stories remain accessible at the top of the screen, maintaining their established position within the Instagram ecosystem.
New ‘Following’ Tab Offers Enhanced Content Control
A key addition to the Instagram for iPad app is the ‘Following’ tab. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, states this tab allows users to easily stay updated with the accounts they follow, offering granular control over content streams.
The ’Following’ tab provides three distinct viewing options:
- All: Displays recommended posts and Reels from followed accounts.
- Friends: Shows recommended posts and Reels from accounts that the user both follows and is followed back by.
- Latest: Presents posts and Reels from followed accounts in strict chronological order.
This offers users a greater degree of customization than the standard instagram feed, catering to different preferences for content revelation and consumption.
Optimized Layouts for Larger Screens
The iPad app takes full advantage of the larger display. Users can now view messages and notifications with layouts designed to showcase both tabs simultaneously. Furthermore, while watching Reels, the comments section remains accessible without minimizing the video, enhancing the viewing experience.
Meta’s Tablet Strategy: Instagram joins WhatsApp
Instagram’s launch on iPad mirrors WhatsApp’s earlier move. The WhatsApp iPad app, released in May, provides the same core functionality as its iPhone and desktop counterparts, including video and audio calls for up to 32 participants, screen sharing, and the use of both front and rear cameras.
This coordinated effort suggests a broader strategy by Meta to cater to the growing tablet market and provide optimized experiences for its popular messaging and social media platforms.
