Central Papua, Indonesia – Authorities have launched an intensive manhunt for a suspected Papuan separatist identified as Yonial Kobogah, following the fatal shooting of a kiosk owner in Wandoga village, sugapa sub-district, Intan Jaya district, Central Papua. The incident, which occurred on Friday around 1:40 p.m. local time,has intensified security concerns in the region.
Details of the incident
The victim, identified as Joni Hendra, was reportedly serving a customer when he was shot. Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, head of the Operation Peace Cartenz Task Force, confirmed that Hendra sustained severe gunshot wounds and was transported to the bilorai Public Health Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Ramadhani stated that Kobogah is believed to be a member of the Papuan separatist group led by Apen Kobogau, a group known to be active in the Intan Jaya area. The suspect fled the scene and is believed to be hiding in the hilly terrain surrounding Wandoga village.
Ongoing security Operations and Regional Context
The Operation Peace Cartenz Task Force is actively pursuing Kobogah, emphasizing their commitment to apprehending individuals who disrupt law and order. “We continue to hunt down and crack down on those disrupting the law and public order,” Ramadhani added, underscoring the task force’s resolve.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence attributed to armed Papuan groups in recent years. These groups have frequently employed hit-and-run tactics against Indonesian security personnel and have targeted civilians across several districts, including Intan Jaya, Nduga, Puncak, and Maybrat.The objective appears to be the instillation of fear among the local population.

December 2, 2018: A brutal attack by armed Papuan separatists resulted in the deaths of 31 workers from PT Istaka Karya. These workers were involved in the Trans Papua project in the yigi sub-district of Nduga district.
September 2, 2021: Members of an armed Papuan group ambushed soldiers sleeping at the Kisor military post in Kisor village, South Aifat sub-district, Maybrat district. March 2, 2022: Eight workers from Palaparing Timur Telematika (PTT) were killed by members of an armed Papuan group in Beoga sub-district, Puncak district. The workers were engaged in repairing a base transceiver station (BTS) tower for Telkomsel.
February 7, 2023: New Zealander pilot Phillip Mark Mehrtens was taken hostage by an armed group led by Egianus kogoya, highlighting the ongoing threat to individuals in the region.
