Interest is being drawn to whether the same industry will work in solidarity with the Webzen labor union, which decided to strike for the first time in the game industry.

According to the Webzen branch of the National Chemical Fiber Food Industry Labor Union of the KCTU on the 12th, the chemical fiber IT committee will jointly discuss the direction of the future industrial action of the Webzen union in the Webzen conference room located in Pangyo, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, on the afternoon of the afternoon.

The Webzen union said, “If industrial action is initiated, it is the first in the game industry and it is judged that it will have a significant impact on the labor unions in the surrounding IT industry.” and announced plans for discussion.

Earlier, the Webzen Society decided to strike for the first time in the game industry. 92.8% of union members participated in a vote in favor of a strike held by the Webzen Branch for two days on the 7th and 8th, and more than two-thirds supported the strike.

There has been no strike yet. Webzen is requesting a direct conversation with CEO Kim Tae-young prior to any industrial action.

This strike resolution stemmed from the failure of wage negotiations. The Webzen union initially proposed a lump sum increase of 10 million won, but after the adjustment of the local labor committee, the union gave up the lump sum and presented a price adjustment plan.

However, the management offered an additional proposal of guaranteeing 2 million won or more at an average of 10% of the existing average (about 4.8 million won to 5 million won), and the negotiations broke down.

The Association of Webzen said, “Webzen recorded the highest sales since its inception, with sales of 290 billion won in 2020 and 280 billion won in 2021, so it has sufficient ability to pay.

“Last year, Webzen also announced that it had raised an average of 20 million won in response to the industry’s high wage hike last year, but there were no employees who actually raised such a raise, so they protested strongly, and as a result, a labor union was established.” Because the expectations of the members are high, the Webzen branch is also devising various methods to fulfill the demands of its members.”

It is known that Webzen is reviewing the request for a conversation at the Webzen conference.

Meanwhile, Webzen recorded annual sales of 294 billion won and operating profit of 108.2 billion won in 2020. This is an increase of 67% and 109%, respectively, compared to the previous year. In 2021, sales and operating profit decreased by 3.17% and 4.86% to KRW 284.7 billion and KRW 102.9 billion, respectively.
