Press Release: Major Exhibition on Animation and Textiles Opens December 7
A new exhibition titled Interlaced: Animation and Textiles will open at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre on December 7, 2024. The exhibition examines the connection between animation and traditional textile arts, including embroidery, quilting, weaving, and tapestry.
Curated by Alla Gadassik from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Canada, this exhibition showcases the works of 26 artists from diverse locations, including New Zealand, the UK, Canada, the USA, Germany, France, Azerbaijan, Sāmoa, and Tonga.
Interlaced highlights various artistic techniques such as moving images, celluloid quilting, and digital tapestries. It also underscores the cultural significance of textiles and their role in shaping modern arts. The work of experimental animator Len Lye, who lived from 1901 to 1980, is a focal point in this show, linking animation with textile design.
