Internal Conflict and Nominations Heat Up 46 Days Before April General Election

◀ Again ▶

We are now 46 days away from the April general election.

Nominations are in full swing for each political party, but the atmosphere is very different.

In the Democratic Party, where the conflict intensified after the notification to low-ranking members of the sitting legislators, leader Hong Ik-pyo directly protested, saying: “I cannot accept a nomination management committee chairman who changes the his words.”

There is also an interpretation that internal conflict over the appointment could lead to conflict among the leadership.

The People Power Party, which is doing relatively well, will announce the results of the first round of the 19 primaries tomorrow.

There is growing interest in whether this will lead to a large-scale “replacement” of active duty.

The Democratic Party is facing backlash over the low-level assessment focused on unaffiliated lawmakers.

President Lim Hyuk-baek of the diplomatic mission reversed his position, saying the scores could be made public if a retrial was requested.

“Even if some members of the bottom 20% file an objection and display it, revealing it is a violation of party rules.”

In response to this, it was confirmed that leader Hong Ik-pyo protested directly to President Lim, asking him why he changed his words, saying: “I can no longer recognize him as chairman of the diplomatic committee.”

At yesterday’s Supreme Council meeting, plan leader Hong suggested excluding the opinion poll firm that caused controversy over fairness, and also publicly criticized the opportunity for provincial party chairman Kim Woo-young from Gangwon, pro-Myeong faction, to run in Eunpyeong, Seoul, the constituency of non-Myung faction member Kang Byeong-won.

According to some interpretations, party leader Hong is trying to resolve internal conflicts in the nomination process, which could lead to a conflict with Representative Lee Jae-myung, who is showing his willingness to address the issue head-on.

″It’s pretty convincing that no one except the party leader could have touched it, and that they spent six months vetting the elected officials and then just handed it over to the official committee members…”

Tomorrow the People Power Party will publish the results of the first primaries in 19 constituencies.

In Yangcheon-gap, Seoul, former and current legislators such as Cho Soo-jin, Jeong Mi-kyung and Koo Ja-ryong are competing with each other, and in three constituencies, races between former and current legislators and members of the president are in the offices also ran.

There is no official “disruption” announcement yet, but depending on the results of the primaries, the so-called “replacement” of incumbent lawmakers could begin.

The People Power Party has announced that it will reveal to candidates the entire process of calculating the primary election results.
