International Collaboration on AI for Sustainable Development: Insights from DSC Europe 2024

Belgrade, November 21, 2024 – At the Data Science Conference Europe 2024, a panel titled “How is international collaboration on AI shaping sustainable development?” featured ambassadors from several European countries and Brazil. They shared insights on AI use, priorities for technology applications, and risks tied to AI.

The event commenced with speeches from UNDP representative Yakup Beris, British Deputy Ambassador Dominic Otway, and Emanuele Giaufret, EU Ambassador.

Beris noted Serbia‘s advancements in AI regulation and development, highlighting Serbia’s upcoming presidency of the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence.

Otway stressed the positive impact of AI on areas like medicine and education, while also cautioning against potential misuse. He urged the need for responsible AI development.

Giaufret discussed the critical crossroads in AI development. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation to promote equality, sustainability, and safety. He commended Serbia for its achievements in agricultural AI applications and the establishment of a national AI strategy.

Luca Gori, Italy’s ambassador, focused on AI’s role in enhancing human potential, particularly in public administration and risk mitigation.

Anke Konrad, from Germany, highlighted the importance of data for AI success, mentioning its applications in crime-solving and visa processes.

Charlotte Sammelin, from Sweden, described how AI helps in the judiciary and healthcare.

José Mauro da Fonseca Costa Couto from Brazil stressed Brazil’s commitment to equality and responsibility in tech development. He mentioned plans for a unified data system to tackle challenges like drought and floods.

The panel concluded by highlighting the need for new regulations, improved data protection, and addressing misinformation. They agreed that, despite risks, AI can greatly benefit humanity if developed and applied wisely.
