International Malala Day is being observed on July 12 to honor Malala Yousafzai, who is working for the right to education for girls around the world. The United Nations has been celebrating Malala Day since July 12, 2013. Today is the 25th birthday of Malala Yousafzai, who gained world attention through her fight for the right to education for girls.

Malala is also a Nobel laureate. Malala was born on July 12, 1997 in Swat Valley, Pakistan. Malala raised her voice against the Taliban who banned girls from going to school. There was even an assassination attempt against Malala because of her constant advocacy for girls’ right to education.

In 2012, Taliban militants shot at Malala because of her constant work for the education of girls. Malala herself described the aftermath of the incident in an earlier post: ”In October 2012, a Taliban member boarded my school bus and shot me in the head. The attack affected my left eye, skull and brain. My eardrums and jaws were broken.”

Malala and her father launched the Malala Fund to campaign for girls’ education and raise awareness on the issue. The Malala Fund works with the Vital Voices Global Partnership.

In December 2014, at the age of 17, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala also holds the distinction of being the youngest recipient of this honor. Malala was appointed as a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017 to raise awareness about the importance of girls’ education. Malala has already won more than 40 awards and honors. ‘I Am Malala’, a biography written by Malala and British journalist Christina Lamb, was also highly regarded.

Malala graduated from Oxford University with degrees in philosophy, politics and economics. Malala shared pictures of the graduation ceremony on social media sites. Completed formal education in 2020. In 2021, she married Azhar Malik, a manager at Pakistan Cricket Governing Body. Malala continues to advocate for girls’ education. Malala’s wish is to create a world where all girls can learn and grow. Malala now lives in Birmingham.
