(New York = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Ji-heon = On the 17th (local time), international oil prices rose 3% as the perception spread that tensions in the Middle East were past their worst.

On this day, the closing price of Brent crude oil futures for June delivery on the ICE Futures Exchange was $87.29 per barrel, down $2.73 (-3.0%) from the previous day’s closing price.

It has been four trading days since the 11th that the price of Brent crude oil futures fell into the $80 per barrel range based on the closing price.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the closing price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil for May delivery was $82.69 per barrel, down $2.67 (-3.1%) from the previous day’s closing price.

Tensions in the Middle East peaked over Israel’s bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria and Iran’s subsequent retaliatory attack on Israel, but as concerns about an escalating war eased somewhat, oil prices fell.

As Western countries, including the United States, urge Israel to refrain from responding after Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel last weekend, the market is watching Israel’s next move.

John Evans, researcher at crude oil brokerage PVM, said, “The oil market is refocusing on the industry situation by returning the risk premium that was reflected in the price related to the war.”

US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell suggested a delay in the interest rate cut the day before, and bond yields continued to rise, which was also a factor raising concerns about the drop in demand for crude oil in the future.

International oil prices have soared to around $92 a barrel on the 12th, based on the price of Brent crude oil, due to recent concerns about supply shortages and the growing crisis in the Middle East.
