Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS contains exceptionally high levels of methanol, according to new astronomical observations that reveal unique chemical conditions in a planetary system beyond our own solar system. Discovered in July 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, the object is only the third confirmed visitor known to cross into our solar system from interstellar space, following ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.

ALMA Detections Reveal Extreme Methanol Levels

Researchers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile detected strong signals of methanol, a simple alcohol molecule, as the comet approached the sun and sunlight warmed its icy surface. According to data from the Atacama Compact Array, the comet exhibits a remarkably high ratio of methanol compared to hydrogen cyanide, with measured production rate ratios reaching approximately 70 and 120 across multiple observation dates in late 2025. That heavy concentration places 3I/ATLAS among the most methanol-rich comets ever studied by astronomers. Observing 3I/ATLAS is like taking a fingerprint from another solar system, said Nathan Roth, lead author of the study and a professor at American University, in a statement released by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. The details reveal what it’s made of, and it’s bursting with methanol in a way we just don’t usually see in comets in our own solar system.

Contrasting Outgassing Behavior in Interstellar Ice

The observations also mapped distinct outgassing behaviors across the comet’s expanding halo, or coma, as solar heating released trapped ices. Data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array showed that hydrogen cyanide streams directly out of the comet’s solid nucleus in a manner typical of domestic solar system comets. In contrast, methanol discharges from both the main nucleus and tiny icy grains drifting within the surrounding coma. Those microscopic ice particles act like miniature comets as they shed gas under solar radiation, marking the first time such detailed outgassing physics has been tracked in an interstellar object. Earlier observations captured by the James Webb Space Telescope indicated that the coma was dominated by carbon dioxide when the visitor resided farther from the sun.

Natural Origins and Scientific Implications

The gathering data, including its diffuse coma, dust tail, and complex molecular composition, confirms that 3I/ATLAS is a natural icy body rather than an artificial visitor, addressing internet speculation that surfaced after its initial detection. Telescopes worldwide, including the Hubble Space Telescope, continue to monitor its trajectory. The findings suggest the interstellar visitor formed under significantly colder temperatures or a distinct chemical inventory compared to comets born in our solar system. The preprint study detailing these findings is currently available on arXiv, providing researchers with a preserved chemical snapshot of planet formation around a distant star.
