Three brothers living near the crime scene in Jette have been arrested following the fatal shooting of 41-year-old Brussels police officer Nordine El Talbi in the night of Monday to Tuesday, Nieuwsblad reported. The officer, a member of the anti-robbery brigade (AOB), was struck in the head by a single bullet while approaching a hijacked vehicle containing a significant quantity of drugs.
Three Brothers Arrested Near Jette Crime Scene
The investigation centers on a dark Volkswagen T-Cross that was stolen in Tubize, Walloon Brabant, and tracked to Jette by security cameras. El Talbi, working in plainclothes as a scout, approached the parked car containing three occupants when one of them opened fire, according to Nieuwsblad. He staggered roughly ten meters before collapsing on the pavement. His backup officers, positioned further away, did not hear the shot and only discovered their fallen colleague upon arrival.
In the hours following the incident, police arrested three brothers who reside fewer than ten houses away from the shooting location. One brother was detained at his home, another was intercepted while driving his taxi, and the third was captured after attempting to flee a local cafe, having previously come to police attention for drug offenses. While the public prosecutor’s office and police suspect their involvement, relatives of the suspects maintain they are innocent and were going about their daily routines, as reported by Nieuwsblad.
Investigators Trace a Second Suspect and Heavy Firearms
Beyond the detained brothers, investigators are pursuing a second lead involving an unidentified individual who entered a nearby pizzeria in a state of mild panic. Wearing a hood and a scarf over his mouth, the person went straight to the restaurant restroom to wash up, likely to rid himself of gunshot residue, before leaving in a hurry, according to Nieuwsblad. Police and lab technicians subsequently searched the restroom for DNA and other traces, though authorities have not confirmed whether this individual is connected to the arrested brothers.
Investigators also recovered three heavy handguns in the immediate vicinity of the shooting. Authorities are examining whether the incident stemmed from a ripdeal, which would indicate the suspects viewed the undercover officer as a rival gang member coming to reclaim the drugs found inside the hijacked vehicle. Alternatively, investigators are weighing whether the occupants simply stole a vehicle that happened to contain a large narcotics shipment.
Colleagues Honor an Experienced Brussels Officer
El Talbi dedicated more than 15 years to the Brussels police force, beginning his career as an urban center inspector in 2009 before joining the elite anti-overvalbrigade (AOB) in 2019, according to reports from VRT and De Standaard. Brussels Capital-Ixelles police chief Michel Goovaerts described him as a passionate officer who realized his dream job within the specialized unit, characterizing him as a genuine Brussels native from a large family who lived for his work. A commemorative gathering for El Talbi is scheduled to take place in the Jubelpark.
