Enthusiasm for migrating to Jeju, where the “old month” craze was once born, is cooling as fast as if it had never happened before. As a result, Jeju Island is launching an investigation into vacant homes that have been abandoned for a long period of time.

According to Jeju Island, on the 29th, the Korean Real Estate Agency will be commissioned to conduct a comprehensive survey of homes estimated to be vacant from next month until December. This is the first systematic survey of empty houses on Jeju Island.

In this investigation, the Korea Real Estate Board will investigate the reasons for the presence of empty houses, the safety status of empty houses, the condition of buildings, the status of design drawings of empty houses, and the opinions of owners regarding the management of houses vacant. .

Previously, in a national survey of empty homes conducted last year by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, it was found that there were at least 1,257 homes in the Jeju area. Over 94% (1,183) of these empty homes were located in rural areas.

In Jeju, homes in rural and fishing villages sold for high prices due to the immigration craze between 2011 and 2016. However, recently, as young and old people abandon rural areas, l The aging of rural areas is becoming more evident and the number of empty houses is increasing.

The net population inflow to Jeju increased rapidly from 2,343 in 2011 to 4,876 in 2012 and 7,823 in 2013. In 2014, the net population inflow exceeded 10,000 (11,112 people) for the first time. Since then, the number has remained at 10,000 per year, with 14,257 people in 2015, 14,632 people in 2016 and 14,005 people in 2017.

Then, in 2018, the number dropped to 8,853, and in 2019 it plummeted to 2,936. Since then, it has remained at the level of 3,378 in 2020, 3,917 in 2021 and 3,148 in 2022.
