The Grim Reality: Recovering Lost Funds is an Uphill Battle
According to Gerald Sakoparnig, head of the fraud department at the State Criminal Police Office Upper Austria, the recovery of funds in such cases is a rarity. “The likelihood of stopping these funds is very low because the victims often do not immediately issue the ad on the first day,” Sakoparnig explains. The speed of reporting is paramount. The longer victims delay, the greater the chance the money will be transferred out of the country, and if it leaves the EU, the prospects of retrieval become exceedingly slim.
