Apple Skips iOS 19, Unveils iOS 26 to Align with Calendar Year
Updated June 14, 2025
At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple revealed its next iPhone operating system: iOS 26. This free update will be available later this year for iPhone models newer than the XS.
The current iOS version is iOS 18, leading to the question: Why the jump to iOS 26? The answer lies in Apple’s marketing strategy. Operating system version numbers are often driven by marketing considerations, allowing Apple the flexibility to name its platforms as it sees fit.
Apple is aligning the iPhone operating system version with the calendar year. While 2025 is the current year, iOS 26’s lifespan will largely be in 2026. The developer beta arrives this summer, with the official public launch in September 2025. iOS 26 will then be the current operating system until September 2026, when iOS 27 is expected.
This strategy prompted Apple to extend the “26” numbering scheme across its othre platforms for consistency. The changes include:
- iOS 19 becomes iOS 26
- iPadOS 19 becomes iPadOS 26
- watchOS 11 becomes watchOS 26
- macOS 15 becomes macOS 26
- visionOS 3 becomes visionOS 26
- tvOS 19 becomes tvOS 26
What’s next
The question remains whether Apple will rebrand the iPhone model to align with the software. The iPhone 17 lineup is expected this fall. While Apple could call it the iPhone 26, it’s more likely they will continue incrementing by one, resulting in the iPhone 17 running iOS 26.
