iOS 26 Unveils Call Screening and Enhanced Spam Filtering
Apple’s iOS 26 is set to include a new call screening feature and enhanced spam filtering for both calls and texts, the company announced at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The updates aim to give users more control over unwanted communications.
The call screening feature in iOS 26 silently answers calls from unknown numbers, prompting callers to state their name and reason for calling. The response is then transcribed in real-time and displayed on the iPhone’s lock screen, allowing users to decide whether to answer, ignore, or reply with a typed message. The typed reply is read to the caller using an automated voice.

Additionally, iOS 26 allows users to report voicemail as spam, a feature missing in previous iOS versions. Reported voicemails are sent to Apple, presumably to improve spam detection algorithms.
While the initial version of call screening requires manual review, future updates are expected to incorporate Apple Intelligence to automatically identify and filter spam calls.
The Messages app in iOS 26 receives a meaningful overhaul, categorizing incoming texts into Messages, Unknown Senders, Spam, and recently Deleted. This new structure resembles an email inbox, allowing users to filter messages and prioritize communications from known contacts.

Texts from known contacts are automatically placed in the main Messages page, while texts from unknown numbers are directed to the Unknown Senders folder.A separate Spam folder is designed to catch unwanted texts using spam detection algorithms similar to those in iOS 18.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that U.S. consumers lost $470 million to text message scams in 2024. By filtering unknown senders, Apple aims to reduce the impact of these scams.
The new spam tools will be available on iOS 26, macOS 25, and iPadOS 26 this fall.
What’s next
Future iterations of iOS are expected to build upon these features, potentially incorporating more advanced AI-driven spam detection and further enhancements to user privacy and security.
