Apple’s first foldable device, the iPhone Fold, is facing production delays, although the company still intends to launch the product in the fall of 2026.

According to reporting from DigiTimes, mass production of the device has been pushed back by roughly one to two months. While the timeline has shifted, Apple has not communicated any changes regarding the overall launch window to its suppliers.

Production Timeline Shifts

Apple originally planned to begin mass production of the iPhone Fold in June 2026. However, that start date has now slipped to early August 2026.

The delay is linked to challenges encountered during the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) phase, which is the current stage of the device’s development. Some reports suggest that manufacturing problems during the EVT phase have been more significant than Apple expected, while other industry rumors suggest these hurdles will not result in a delayed consumer launch.

Before the device can enter mass production, it must still successfully complete two subsequent stages: Design Validation Testing (DVT) and Production Validation Testing (PVT).

Conflicting Launch Forecasts

The production setbacks have led to conflicting reports regarding when the device will actually reach consumers. On April 7, 2026, the Japanese publication Nikkei reported that engineering delays could potentially push the launch of the iPhone Fold into 2027.

Conflicting Launch Forecasts

Conversely, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has stated that the device remains on track to launch around the same time or soon after the iPhone 18 Pro models in September 2026.

The report from DigiTimes reconciles these two perspectives by indicating that while the testing phase is indeed delayed, Apple may be able to make up for the lost time during the mass production phase to maintain the fall 2026 target.

Supply Chain and Availability Risks

The compression of the production schedule may have implications for product availability. A delay in the mass production timeline often leads to serious supply chain shortages.

Industry history suggests that when production issues are reported this early in an iPhone hardware cycle, the result is typically severe launch shortages. This often leads to the device selling out within minutes during the pre-order phase.

Device Specifications and Pricing

The iPhone Fold is expected to be Apple’s first entry into the foldable market. The device will feature a 5.5-inch display when closed, which expands to a 7.8-inch display when opened.

The estimated cost for the device is projected to be between $2,000 and $2,500.
