I was lucky enough to be part of the foldable phone trend in the Czech Republic right from the beginning. It was a completely new category of devices that definitely caught the eye at first glance. Manufacturers were coming up with new ways to use phones and finally broke away from the mundane design of smartphones. At the end of 2019, mobile phones became interesting again. But in recent years, their magic has faded – mainly because, even after years, some shortcomings have not been addressed and the price of phones has not fallen as much as expected.
Foldable books have many reasons to want them. The main one is a larger internal display for more comfortable work. But there are also details that convinced me to return to regular phones
While at first it was a feeling of something new, it turned out that the progress of foldable phones did not go as fast forward as I had expected. You get used to them quickly and accept them, but after years I returned to a phone with a classic construction as my main phone. And yet
Techno při starém.
skládací telefony v Česku:
Table of Contents
Folding phone on vacation
And there was another reason for this – durability. Yes, the durability of folding phones has improved significantly in recent years. Some have come with dust resistance and also partial water resistance. But you definitely don’t want sand to get into the hinge or between the closed surfaces of the inner display on the beach. If it accidentally falls into the sand, it will be a problem to get rid of it. Grains will get into the hinge, between the surrounding frame and the protective film – it’s something you don’t want to go through twice. That’s also why I took a different phone on vacation. For example, because it doesn’t mind falling into the water, while a folding phone might not recover from it.

Cameras are often much better on classic top models than on folding phones
The durability of the construction itself has never been a problem for me. Just to say that titanium folders are not mainstream, aluminum is a relatively soft material when falling, and so you have to protect your investment from the start. The latest generation of folding phones, which are very thin (Honor and Samsung), look great at first glance. But you have to choose whether you prefer the look (and you will probably damage it if you drop it on the ground), or you will protect them with covers – but the phones will then not be so pleasantly thin. And thay won’t attract you or your surroundings either. I was checking the condition of the folding phone

Microsoft’s Surface Duo Plans Scaled Back
Microsoft has significantly reduced its ambitions for the Surface Duo line of dual-screen devices, shifting from developing a third-generation model to focusing on software experiences for existing devices and exploring AI-powered features, according to a report by Windows central on January 24, 2026.
Initial Duo Vision and Market Reception
The Surface Duo, launched in September 2020, represented Microsoft’s re-entry into the mobile device market. It featured two 5.6-inch displays connected by a hinge, aiming to blend the portability of a phone with the productivity of a tablet. The device ran a customized version of Android. Despite innovative hardware, the Surface Duo faced challenges due to its high price ($1,399 at launch), limited camera capabilities, and software inconsistencies.
Early reviews highlighted the device’s potential but also pointed to its shortcomings. The Surface Duo 2, released in October 2021, addressed some of these concerns with improved cameras and processors, but it still struggled to gain notable market share against established smartphone manufacturers. The Surface Duo 2 retailed for $1,499.
Cancellation of Surface Duo 3
microsoft has reportedly cancelled plans for a Surface Duo 3, codenamed “phoenix.” The project was initially intended to feature a redesigned form factor with a more conventional foldable design, potentially resembling the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series.Sources indicate that the cancellation stemmed from a combination of factors, including the device’s projected cost, competition in the foldable market, and a strategic shift within Microsoft.
According to Windows Central, the Surface Duo 3 was expected to launch in late 2024 or early 2025, but the project was halted in late 2023. The decision reflects Microsoft’s reassessment of its hardware strategy and a greater emphasis on software and services.
Focus on Software and AI
Instead of pursuing new Surface Duo hardware, Microsoft is now concentrating on enhancing the software experience for existing Surface Duo and duo 2 owners. This includes optimizing Android integration, improving multitasking capabilities, and delivering new features through software updates. A key area of focus is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity and usability.
Panos Panay, formerly the chief product officer overseeing the Surface Duo project, publicly discussed the potential of AI in mobile devices during a microsoft event in September 2023. While not directly referencing the Surface Duo, his comments indicated a broader company-wide interest in leveraging AI to enhance mobile experiences. Broader Implications for microsoft’s Hardware Strategy
The scaling back of the Surface Duo project signals a potential shift in Microsoft’s hardware strategy. While the company remains committed to the Surface line of laptops and tablets, it appears to be becoming more selective about entering highly competitive markets like smartphones. Microsoft’s focus is increasingly on providing software and services that run across a variety of devices, rather than solely relying on hardware sales.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, stated in the company’s Q1 2024 earnings call that “our strategy is to empower customers with the tools they need to succeed, irrespective of the device they choose.” Microsoft Q1 2024 Earnings Call Transcript This statement underscores the company’s broader emphasis on software and cloud services.
