IPL Playoff Battle: A Look at Team Standings and Playoff Odds

Mumbai: As the IPL playoff battle enters the final round, the special feature this time is that the teams except Mumbai Indians, who are ninth in the points table, still have a possibility of playoffs. If they lose the Punjab-RCB match today, RCB will also be eliminated without seeing the playoffs Kolkata and Rajasthan, who are in the second position with 16 points each, are the only teams in the playoffs opportunity at the moment. Let’s see how the teams and playoff odds stack up.

Kolkata Knight Riders: With 16 points in 11 games and a net run rate of 1.453, Kolkata Knight Riders are the first team that can be said to have guaranteed 99 percent of the playoffs. There are three games left for Kolkata. In this regard, Kolkata’s two rivals are Mumbai Indians, whose playoff hopes are over, and Gujarat Titans, who have a slim chance of making it to the playoffs. Even if they win one of these games, Kolkata will make it to the playoffs. Kolkata’s opponent in the final match is Rajasthan Royals. The winners are assumed to be those who finish first in the points table.

Rajasthan Royals: Like Kolkata, Rajasthan with 16 points in 11 matches is behind Kolkata in net run rate (0.476). With three games to go, Rajasthan are said to be 96 percent play-offs. Rajasthan’s next opponents are Chennai Super Kings, who have playoff hopes, Punjab Kings, who have only a slim chance, and Kolkata, who are at the top. Even if they win one of these matches, Rajasthan will qualify for the playoffs. Two matches will be played at Guwahati’s home ground and one match will be played at Chennai’s home ground.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Another team that has come close to the playoffs is Hyderabad, who have overtaken Chennai and reached third place after defeating Lucknow. With 14 points from 12 matches, Hyderabad have a 65 percent chance of making it to the playoffs. In yesterday’s match, Hyderabad beat Lucknow within 10 overs and made a big jump in the net run rate (+0.406). In the last two games, Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings, whose chances of getting playoffs have diminished, are also a positive factor for Hyderabad.

Chennai Super Kings: After the top three finishers, the most likely team to reach the playoffs is the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Fourth-placed Chennai Super Kings with 12 points from 11 matches have a 55 percent chance of making the playoffs. Chennai’s next opponents are RCB, Gujarat Titans, who have a slim chance of making the playoffs, and second-placed Rajasthan Royals. If they win at least two out of three games, Chennai can make it to the playoffs. In net run rate (0.700) Chennai also have a slight edge over their rivals.

Lucknow Super Giants: Lucknow’s play-off chances were also dealt a heavy blow after they suffered a massive defeat against Hyderabad in today’s match. Lucknow is currently sixth in the points table with 12 points from 12 matches. Lucknow has a 39 percent chance of making the playoffs. If they win the last two matches, Lucknow can hope for the playoffs. But along with that, Chennai Super Kings have to lose. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians are Lucknow’s opponents in the last two matches. The only downside is that both are away games.

Capitals of Delhi: After defeating Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals moved to the fifth position in the points table with 12 points, but they have a 30 percent chance of reaching the playoffs. Delhi have a chance to reach the playoffs only if they win the last two matches. In this regard, RCB and Lucknow are rivals of Delhi. Delhi will have an away game against RCB and a home game against Lucknow. It is not enough to win these two matches, if Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants lose their remaining matches, Delhi has a chance.

RCB: Only if that happens after the top six teams have a chance at the play-offs. With just eight points in 11 games, RCB have just a three percent chance. RCB will only have a chance if they win the remaining three matches and their opponents’ match results are favourable. RCB’s rivals are Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings. It has the benefit of home games against Chennai and Delhi. If they lose today’s match against Punjab Kings, RCB will be out of the playoffs.

Kings of Punjab: Punjab Kings have only three percent chance of playoffs with eight points from 11 matches like RCB. Punjab Kings will have a chance only if they win the remaining three matches and their opponents’ results are favourable. Apart from RCB, Rajasthan and Hyderabad are strong opponents in the final games, but it is a hurdle for Punjab.

Gujarat Titans: Things are a little more difficult for Gujarat Titans, who are in the last position with eight points from 11 games. Gujarat has only a two percent chance of playoffs. If they win the last three games, the opponents’ results should also be favorable. Gujarat’s rivals are Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians: Mumbai, who are currently ninth in the points table but have played one match more than last-placed Gujarat, are the first team to be eliminated this season without reaching the play-offs. With Hyderabad beating Lucknow, Mumbai officially became the first team to miss out on the playoffs. With eight points from 12 matches, Mumbai will not make it to the playoffs even if they win the last two matches. The strong Kolkata and Hyderabad are the next opponents and closed the way for Mumbai.
