Iran Claims to Have Shot Down Advanced Enemy Fighter Jet

Iran has claimed that its air defense systems shot down U.S. Aircraft, marking the first confirmed losses of American planes in the country since the start of the conflict on February 28, 2026. The incidents occurred amidst a sustained bombing campaign by American and Israeli forces.

According to reports from The New York Times and other sources, an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was downed in the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province in southwestern Iran, located near the Iraqi border. The aircraft, valued at $31 million, was lost after the pilots were forced to bail out. While one pilot was rescued following the incident on April 4, 2026, a second pilot remains missing behind enemy lines. Tehran has since placed a bounty on the missing American Air Force pilot.

Air Defense Capabilities and Technical Claims

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya joint military command stated via state media that a new air defense system will allow the Islamic Republic to definitely achieve full control over its airspace. The New York Times reported that the Third Khordad, a mobile medium-range surface-to-air defense system, may have been used to shoot down the F-15E Strike Eagle.

Other experts, as cited by ABC News, suggest that Iran may have utilized passive infrared detection systems. These systems allow for the tracking and targeting of aircraft without emitting radar signals, which can typically be detected and evaded by U.S. Jets.

There have been conflicting reports regarding the specific aircraft involved. A spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya central headquarters claimed that an F-35 was brought down over the central part of the country by a new air defense system operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, photos of the wreckage published by Iranian state media and the semi-official Tasnim News Agency show a tailfin and debris consistent with an F-15E Strike Eagle rather than the single-seat F-35.

Additional Losses and Rescue Operations

The loss of the F-15E led to a subsequent rescue mission for the missing pilot. During this operation, an A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft was hit. The A-10 subsequently crashed after reaching Kuwaiti airspace, though the pilot safely ejected from the aircraft.

The U.S. Military has reported hitting more than 12,300 targets since the beginning of the war on February 28, 2026. U.S. Officials claim that this bombing campaign has degraded Iran’s drone and missile capabilities by more than 90%.

Despite these claims of degradation, Iran continues to assert the effectiveness of its new defense systems. US Central Command has disputed Iranian claims regarding the shooting down of an enemy fighter jet.
