Amid the ongoing armed conflict across the Middle East, a long-serving missionary organization reports a notable spiritual shift among local populations, with many individuals questioning Islam and turning to Christianity. According to Pastor Georges Houssney of Horizons International, who has spent over 50 years working with Muslim communities, heightened regional violence and instability are driving a wave of disillusionment with traditional religious structures.

Missionary Observations and Historical Context

Pastor Houssney, whose ministry includes helping translate the Bible into Kurdish, noted that spiritual openness frequently surges during periods of prolonged conflict. According to reporting from CBN News, Houssney met with a group of former Kurdish Muslims from Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq in Seoul, South Korea, where they discussed leaving behind their former beliefs. “Every time there’s a war, there’s a movement toward Christ,” Pastor Houssney stated. He added that individuals often grow disillusioned with what they view as a world and religion causing war, leading them to seek alternative paths.

Impact of Regional Refugee Crises

Another critical turning point for these conversion movements occurred during the 2011 Syrian refugee crisis, according to ministry leaders. As approximately two million Syrians fled across the border into Lebanon, many arrived facing severe economic hardship, unemployment, and displacement. Horizons International responded by deploying outreach teams into the streets to set up tables with scriptures, engaging individuals who inquired about the texts. Ministry organizers report that what began with small groups of roughly 20 participants has since grown, with thousands of displaced individuals eventually converting to Christianity.

Accounts of Dreams and Visions

Beyond institutional outreach and literature distribution, several converts report supernatural encounters as a primary catalyst for their transition. Kurdish Ministry Director Pastor Nihad recounted experiencing a vision of Jesus while imprisoned in Syria for political reasons. Confined to a small cell and suffering from physical pain and depression, Nihad recalled praying for healing. “I saw in a vision a person in white entering my prison cell carrying a bowl of olive oil. Every time He poured oil on my body, the pain went away,” Pastor Nihad said, according to CBN News. He recognized the figure after having previously read a book by evangelist Billy Graham that was given to him prior to his imprisonment. Released six months later, Nihad now travels and shares his testimony globally. Missionary leaders emphasize that these shifting demographics present administrative and pastoral challenges for regional churches, particularly regarding the need for adequate discipleship structures to support the influx of new believers.
