Iranian President Pezhichiyan said in Tehran on the 16th that Iran is not trying to develop nuclear weapons and is still committed to maintaining the framework of the JCPOA on Iran’s nuclear issue.
Pezeshchiyan said at his first press conference after taking office that day: “We are not trying to develop nuclear weapons, but only trying to meet our technical and scientific needs.” He said that Iran is still committed to maintaining the framework of the Iran nuclear agreement, The failure of “other countries” to fulfill the terms of the agreement forced Iran to abandon its original intentions. If the United States and some European countries promise to continue to implement the terms of the agreement, Iran will also comply.

Pezeshchiyan also said that Iran has never been a war party and has no hostility towards other countries, but Iran needs to maintain its defense capabilities to ensure the security of the country and its people.
In July 2015, Iran reached the Iran nuclear deal with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. In May 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement, and then restarted and added a series of new sanctions against Iran. Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended implementation of some of the terms of the agreement, but promised that the measures taken were “reversible.” Since April 2021, the relevant parties of the Iran nuclear deal have held several rounds of talks in Vienna, the capital of Austria, to discuss the issue of the United States and Iran resuming compliance with the agreement, with the United States indirectly participating in the discussions. In early August 2022, the EU presented a “final text“ to the negotiating participants on the resumption of implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, after which Iran and the United States exchanged written views on this text, but the negotiations have not achieved any significant results since September 2022.
