(Cairo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Sang-hoon = Iran strongly condemned the US attack on Iraqi and Syrian territory.

According to foreign media outlets such as Reuters on the 3rd (local time), Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Khanani said in a statement that day, “The US attack on Iraq and Syria is another adventure and strategic mistake that escalates tension and instability in the region.”

The spokesman Khanani also said that this attack by the United States was designed to cover up the crimes committed by the Zionist regime (Israel) in the Gaza Strip, and stressed, “The UN Security Council must stop the illegal attack and unilateral by the United States.”

This is Iran’s first response following the US retaliatory attack that targeted pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and Syria the day before.

The US Central Command previously announced that it had carried out airstrikes against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and allied militias in Iraq and Syria at 4 PM (US Eastern time) the previous day.

The command explained that the airstrikes were carried out against more than 85 targets in 7 areas, including operational command and control facilities and storage warehouses for rockets, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

This is interpreted as the United States launching a full-scale retaliation for the drone strike on a US military base in Jordan that killed three US soldiers.

In relation to this, the Syrian Ministry of Defense criticized the United States in a statement, saying, “US airstrikes in eastern Syria have resulted in numerous civilian and military deaths, as well as damage to public and private property.”

However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Syrian human rights organization based in the UK, reported that a total of 23 people were killed in the US attack, including 10 pro-Iranian militias who were killed in Deir Izzor and 13 in Mayadin They said that he had come out.

SOHR added that nine militants among the dead were Syrian nationals, six Iraqi nationals, and there were no civilian deaths.

The Iraqi government also joined the ranks of criticism, saying that at least 16 people, including civilians, were killed and 23 injured in the attack in the United States.

Iraqi government spokesman Basim al-Awadi criticized, “American planes carried out airstrikes on the areas of our security forces. This is a violation of Iraq’s territorial sovereignty.” He also refuted some media reports that his country’s military had cooperated with the US airstrike, saying it was not true.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq announced that it intends to invite the acting ambassador of the United States to Iraq to submit a letter of protest related to the attack.
