An Israeli missile strike on a heavily guarded compound in western Tehran late Saturday killed several high-ranking commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including the top intelligence chief of the elite Quds Force. The attack, deep within Iranian territory, is considered a direct act of aggression amid escalating tensions.
The strike targeted a “strategic facility” linked to Iran’s foreign operations and intelligence coordination, according to Israeli officials. Iranian state media confirmed the explosions and deaths, reporting smoke plumes and emergency deployments in tehran’s western suburbs.
Iran’s military leadership has promised “decisive and lawful retaliation,” with analysts warning of a potential full-scale war if diplomacy fails.
According to Gazeta,the strike killed at least four IRGC commanders,including Brigadier General Reza Zaheri,head of external intelligence,and two senior aides. One victim allegedly coordinated regional resistance strategies in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.
Tasnim News confirmed that Brigadier Generals mohammad Reza Zahedi and Mohammad hadi Haji Rahimi, key figures in the Quds Force, were also killed.They oversaw strategic missions abroad and held posts in Lebanon and Syria.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu seemingly confirmed the operation on Fox News, stating that “Iran’s top spy chiefs have been eliminated in the heart of Tehran,” according to The Yeshiva World. He called it “a message to Iran and its proxies that no place is safe if they continue threatening Israeli sovereignty.”
While Israel has not officially claimed obligation, Netanyahu’s admission has fueled tensions and outrage among Iranian officials, who view his remarks as a declaration of war.
Iran vows revenge, regional allies prepare response
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council convened an emergency session in response to the strike. Major General Mohammad Bagheri,Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces,declared that Iran would “choose the time and place of its response,but the price will be heavy and unforgettable.”
Public outrage has surged across Iran, with thousands protesting in Tehran and other cities during funeral processions for the generals.The IRGC announced a three-day mourning period and held the United States accountable as Israel’s primary backer.
Tehran formally accused Washington of authorizing “an illegal act of state terror,” claiming that U.S. intelligence agencies provided satellite coordination and targeting data. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani called the assault “a war crime committed under the umbrella of US protection,” demanding global condemnation, according to the Foreign Ministry of Iran.
Russia, Syria and Iraq voice support for Iran
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denounced the Israeli airstrike as ”unprovoked and illegal” under international law, according to reuters. She said such actions violate the UN Charter and threaten regional stability.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli strike, warning of destabilizing consequences. “We regard this as an absolutely unprovoked and illegal attack against a sovereign UN member state,” the ministry said. It urged restraint and adherence to international law,according to Reuters.
Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) announced heightened alert in response to the strike. Kata’ib Hezbollah,a major PMU faction,warned of a “regional response” should Israel carry out further attacks,according to Reuters.
Domestic crisis deflection or geopolitical gamble?
Analysts suggest Netanyahu’s actions might potentially be motivated by domestic issues, including protests over judicial overhauls, economic stagnation, and corruption scandals. Escalating tensions with Iran could rally nationalist support and distract from his unpopularity.
Dr. Elias Khoury, a regional affairs expert at the University of Damascus, said, “This was not just a military strike—it was a political calculation. Netanyahu is cornered, and war often becomes the favorite tool of politicians facing internal collapse.”

Iran’s next move and the risks of full-scale war
Despite past restraint, Iran may respond differently this time due to the deaths of top generals, Israel’s public boasting, and perceived U.S. complicity, potentially igniting a broader regional war.
General Esmail Qaani, commander of the Quds Force, reportedly met with senior military officials from the Axis of Resistance, including Hezbollah and iraq’s Kata’ib Hezbollah, to discuss coordinated operations.
