Tensions between Iran and Israel have reached a new high as both nations exchanged ballistic missiles and drone strikes. The ongoing attacks have prompted international concern and calls for de-escalation.
The Israeli military, in a series of strikes Saturday, reportedly targeted key Iranian energy infrastructure and sites associated with Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. The israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strikes hit the Ministry of Defense headquarters and the “headquarters of the SPND nuclear project,” among other locations. The IDF stated these targets were advancing Iran’s nuclear weapons program and concealing its nuclear archive.
According to Iran’s oil ministry, the Shahran depot was struck. Iranian state media also reported a hit on the Shahr Rey oil refinery. The Islamic Republic news Agency reported that fuel levels in the targeted tanks were low and the situation was under control.
Iranian state media further indicated that an IDF drone struck the South Pars natural gas field in the Persian Gulf, jointly owned by Iran and Qatar. Israeli air defense systems reportedly intercepted incoming Iranian missiles.
In Israel, the death toll from Iranian strikes rose to seven. Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service, reported that three women died in Western Galilee after a rocket struck near a residential building. Another woman in her 60s died in central Israel.
The exchange of fire began Thursday night when Israel launched strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear program and killing several top Iranian generals. Dozens of Iranian nuclear scientists also died in the initial Israeli attack.
Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles aimed at major Israeli population centers, including Tel Aviv. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the United States was not involved in Israel’s initial attack. However, the U.S.military assisted Israel in intercepting missiles following Iran’s retaliation Friday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet Saturday as the exchange of strikes continued, according to a photo released by the Israeli government.
