Iran Foreign Minister Calls Israel Strikes a ‘declaration of War’
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has characterized recent Israeli strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and military leaders as a “declaration of war.” This statement comes as Iran swiftly appointed replacements for key commanders killed in the attacks.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also released a statement alleging that the Israeli aggression required coordination with and approval from the United States. The ministry asserted that the U.S. government,as Israel’s primary supporter,bears obligation for the repercussions of these actions.
Among those killed in the strikes were Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami and Chief of Staff of the Armed forces Gen. Mohammad Bagheri. Ahmad Vahidi has been named as Salami’s temporary replacement,while Habibollah Sayyari will fill in for bagheri.
Vahidi previously served as Iran’s defense minister and interior minister. He also led the IRGC’s elite Quds Force (QF) from 1988 to 1998. Sayyari is a former marine who led Iran’s navy from 2007 to 2017.
