Since the early 2000s, Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities, utilizing gas centrifuges, have been a primary source of worry. These centrifuges can produce both low-enriched uranium (LEU) for power reactors and highly enriched uranium (HEU), a key component of nuclear weapons. Iran maintains its enrichment program is solely for peaceful purposes.
The 2015 Joint Thorough Plan of Action (JCPOA) imposed restrictions and monitoring on Iran’s nuclear activities. However, the U.S. withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, and Iran subsequently ceased adhering to many of its terms, including IAEA monitoring. Since 2019, Iran has exceeded JCPOA limits, accelerating its enrichment program and reducing the time needed for a potential “breakout” to produce weapons-grade HEU.
U.S. assessments indicate Iran halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. Recent intelligence suggests Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei holds the ultimate decision-making power regarding nuclear weapons growth. While previous assessments noted Iran lacked all necessary weaponization technologies, more recent reports omit this statement.
The JCPOA supplemented IAEA safeguards, empowering the agency to detect nuclear material diversion and undeclared activities. U.S. officials have expressed confidence in detecting any iranian breakout attempt. the Wall Street Journal reported in August 2024 that the U.S. intelligence community can detect Iranian efforts to build a nuclear weapon.
Estimates for Iran’s nuclear weapon development consider the time to produce sufficient HEU and complete remaining steps for an implosion-style device. This involves compressing nuclear material to create a supercritical mass for a sustained chain reaction.
