Iran-Israel conflict: Is Regime Change a Realistic Outcome?

Updated June 17, 2025

Following ⁢Israeli airstrikes, including one that hit Iran’s state broadcaster, the potential for regime change in Iran is being debated. While Israel’s Prime ⁢minister Benjamin Netanyahu ⁤has urged Iranians to overthrow their government, ⁤analysts are weighing the feasibility and implications⁤ of such a scenario ⁢amid the ‍ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

The Israeli military operation, dubbed “Rising Lion,” has ‍targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and key military figures. Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran project at the Foundation for defense of Democracies, suggested⁢ the operation’s scope extends beyond merely ‍countering nuclear ‍proliferation.

Giora Eiland, former head ⁤of Israel’s national security‍ council, ‍said that while the explicit goal is to set back Iran’s nuclear and missile programs, regime change is ‍the “implicit goal or dream or hope” of the Israeli government.

The recent strikes have damaged one Iranian nuclear enrichment site, while others remain untouched. Israel also appears to be systematically eliminating senior leaders within Iran’s revolutionary guard Corps. Netanyahu has described ⁢the strikes as an opportunity for Iranian citizens to rise up.

Despite these actions, the prospect of immediate regime change remains uncertain. Although weakened by sanctions and internal dissent, ‍the Iranian regime has maintained its grip on power for four decades.

so far, there hasn’t been much concerted anti-regime protest since the strikes began.
