Iran’s judiciary has announced the release of assets belonging to Zahra Ghanbari, the captain of the Iranian women’s national football team. The decision reverses a previous court order to seize the player’s assets following a high-profile asylum dispute in Australia.

According to Iran’s Mizan news agency, the release of the assets was finalized by court decision on Monday, April 14, 2026. The judiciary stated that the move followed a declaration of innocence following her change in behaviour.

The Australia Asylum Dispute

The controversy began in March 2026, when Ghanbari was part of a group consisting of six players and one member of the backroom staff who sought asylum in Australia. The group had been participating in the Women’s Asian Cup during the onset of a conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel.

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, previously stated that Australia had offered asylum to all players and support staff before they departed for Iran. This offer was made due to concerns that the team members could face punishment upon their return after the team refused to sing Iran’s national anthem during the tournament.

Despite the initial asylum bids, five of the individuals, including Ghanbari, eventually changed their minds and returned to Iran with the rest of the national team.

Return to Iran and Asset Seizure

Upon returning to Tehran, the players were given a hero’s welcome at a special ceremony held in the city center on March 19, 2026.

However, the return did not immediately resolve the legal standing of the players. On April 11, 2026, Iranian media published a list of individuals termed traitors whose assets had been frozen by court order. This action followed the outbreak of war on February 28.

Zahra Ghanbari’s name appeared on this list of individuals with frozen assets, although the exact date the decision to seize her assets was made was not immediately clear.

Pressure on the National Team

The situation highlighted the significant pressure faced by the athletes. Two players who initially sought asylum before deciding to return to Iran spoke with Al Jazeera regarding the environment they encountered.

Mona Hamoudi, one of the players who returned, described the intensity of the situation, stating:

I felt that any mistake could become a huge problem. Every step had to be thought about twice before being taken.

The release of Ghanbari’s assets marks a legal resolution for the captain following her withdrawal of the asylum claim and her return to the national squad.
